Are you sleeping, are you sleeping?

September 18, 2014

Oh, excuse me. I just dozed off there for a minute. It’s so easy to do. As the mom of a previously busy household, I could fall asleep at the oddest times. Laying on the sofa, in the midst of noisy kids, would always lull me to sleep. When they left the room and it became silent, I would bolt awake. My husband, on the other hand, can sleep anywhere, anytime.

I have found some other things that lull me to sleep, cares of this life, discontentment, discouragement and unforgiveness. Yep, all of these put you right to sleep, and the amazing thing is, that right before you fall asleep, you are wide awake.

The virgins in Matthew 25 who found that they were lacking oil when the bridegroom appeared, were awake at one time. The problem is that they were not awake at the RIGHT time. That is the danger of falling asleep. There are times when falling asleep is down-right disastrous, such as while swimming, on safari or driving. It is also not very good to fall asleep in class while important instructions are being given. “If you follow these instructions carefully, you will pass this class…” “zzzzZZZZ oops! What’d he say???” It is time to pinch yourself and see if you are sleeping.

Well, I confess, I was dozing, rightfully so, I was tired. Yeah, I was tired because of all the discouragement I had been battling, and the discontentment would put anyone to sleep. When I started to rouse, I just smacked that snooze button to head back to bed with some unforgiveness. Yes, I am being factious, but just a tad.

Discouragement is difficult to battle sometimes. That is why the enemy throws it at us. While we wallow in our sorrow, mulling issues in our head over and over and over, we are slowly and sometimes not so slowly falling asleep spiritually. Then when we realize that has happened, we become even more discouraged. My pocket Webster’s tells me that when we are discouraged, that we are deprived of hope. Need I tell you who it is that deprives us of our hope?

So today, I want to be the hope fairy. I want to sprinkle some “hope dust” on you, and maybe even a little on myself. Let’s start by finding some rest from these burdens. In the midst of negative emotions we can easily forget very basic scriptures like, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

Oh, to have rest for our souls. Aahhhh Take a deep breath right here, REALLY, right now! Now re-read that verse. “Come to me ALL you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

Dear one, it is never good to be found asleep in the wrong place at the wrong time. We live in a dangerous time. If discouragement or any other struggle has you down; today focus on this scripture. Write it on a card and keep it with you. Also remember to declare, “Find rest, O my soul, in God alone; my hope comes from Him. He alone is my rock and my salvation; He is my fortress, I will not be shaken!”
