Got a Bucket List?

April 7, 2014

Every now and then you run across them, lists of things you should do or see before you die. This morning I saw one of those lists on my e-mail. It was a list of 20 places I should see before I die. Well, who decided on that? Hmmm, only 20? Are these places that I personally have been dreaming about? Are these places on God’s list of places He wants me to visit? Well, if you know me, that list stared my wheels a turning.
To start with, let’s ponder a moment on the 20 things we should do before we die. Wow, how do we narrow it down to just 20? Let me give you a clue here, I’m pretty sure there is a book out there that gives us the answers to this list. The Bible contains all the information we need to compile the 20 things we should do before we die.
I’m going to just throw out a quick list. This is by no means is a definitive list but I hope it is a list that will start YOUR wheels a turning. The main thing that a list like this should do is to serve as a thermometer. How are you doing? Are the things that you are working toward and spending your time and money on, getting you closer to fulfilling this list of 20 things you should do before you die? If not, I’d say some adjusting is in order.
Here we go.
1. Accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior. I bet you saw that one coming.
2. Every day of my life and every moment of every day strive to love God with everything in me.
3. Every day of my life and every moment of every day strive to love others in my heart and in my actions.
4. Gain wisdom and understanding.
5. To live my life daily that it makes a difference for the Kingdom of God.
6. To love and teach others to do the same.
7. To daily give the time and attention to pursuing the presence of God in my life.
8. Lead someone to Christ.
9. Read the entire Bible
10. Go on a missions trip
11. Train my children in the way they should go.
12. Spend quantity and quality time with those I love.
13. This is where I will stop.
As I began making this list I found that to do so really causes you to search your own heart and to find out what really matters to you and what you believe really matters to God. So how about some homework? Ah come on! Just give it a try! Make your own list. You can use any of the items I have listed or start fresh with number one, but make your list of 20.
It is easy to read and receive or listen and hear, but oh so much harder to search your own heart and figure out what you really believe. What are you really doing every day when you wake up? Are you going through the motions and just doing what is in front of you to do, or do you live by a master plan and purposely make your actions line up with what you wish to accomplish before you die?
Some people’s list is merely a list of goals, to achieve earthly accomplishments. I believe that time spent pursing the treasures that are not of this earth, not only gives you a richer life but in the end truly makes a difference in the lives of those around you.
Why are we here? That is the question that has existed since the creation of man. Well, why ARE you here? I am here to tell you that you are not here to just take up space and float from one day to the next. God created you for a purpose. He has a “bucket list” specifically for you. It is not a list with just lovely places to see and exciting things to do. It is a list that involves bringing you into intimacy with Himself. It is a list that involves developing each gift He has placed within you to bless you and others. It is a list that involves true submission to Him and service to others.
Spend some time in prayer. Ask the Lord to help you know what should be on your list. Ask Him to help you adjust your activities and life so that you are walking in the fulfillment of that list. Do not continue to spend your time on things that have no value for this life or the next.

I would love to hear from you. What are the awesome things God revealed to you for your list?
Thanks for taking the time to read!!

I want to learn to see people and situations like Jesus when He lived on this Earth.
