The Summer of Preparation

October 30, 2013

As I look out my window I watch golden leaves floating to the ground. Everywhere you walk leaves crunch beneath your feet and a chill has arrived that makes you bundle up and rush indoors to sit by a cozy fire. Fall arrived right on schedule according to the calendar but not according to my chore list. Actually my chore list was written by an over zealous project maniac. Opps, I think I wrote that list.

You may have noticed I have been light on blogs this summer, at least I hope you noticed. So today I’m going to share with you some of the accomplishments of the Spence clan; those monumental projects that have kept us all busy and feeling a tad bit like farmers.

Steve and Josh built this great bunny barn and chicken coop.

A little side note; after caring for the chickens and shoveling more than her share of chicken poop for a number of weeks, Anna who loves animals announced, “I don’t care now if we eat these chickens.” Don’t worry friends, Henny Penny is safe, ( as long as she lays eggs!)

Two days ago we did a professional photo shoot for the girl’s 13th birthday. They looked like models, but I have to say, I like these photos almost as much.

Since we have a barn, we had to add barn kitties. Meet Posey.

My life has been transformed as I have slowed down and taken my own advice. This summer was filled with plenty of work and projects but it was a different kind of busy. My son learned carpenter skills and the value of hard work. My girls have been extremely responsible caring for all of the animals. The girls also learned to can and we enjoyed our time together in the kitchen. Next year we will enjoy the fruits of our labor, literally. Our family spent many hours outside together enjoying fellowship with one another. We found surprisingly that a new spot to enjoy in our yard was sitting together by the barn while we all enjoyed the animals. We laughed together as we tried to retrieve the ducks from our swimming pool and we spent many hours reading together in the swing by the creek.
Summer has come to a close. Our season of hard work and preparation is coming to a close and the holiday season is ahead of us. My prayer for my family and yours is that we all find true joy in each season. I pray that we will all focus on those things of true and eternal value.
