What Cha Thinkin?

June 12, 2012

Things have been a bit busy for me lately.  Some lingering is on my mind but duty calls, so for now my lingering will have to wait.  Extra services and duty at church are filling my time but also filling my heart.  Tonight I heard a message so dear to my heart.  It was about the battle between our will and the will of God.  It all starts in our mind.  So I thought I would re-share one of my posts that addresses this very issue.  While I am about my Father’s business, I hope you enjoy this re-post.

Today we start at the top.  I’m talking about the literal top of you; your head.  This is where it all starts.  To begin to follow a dream or set goals we really need to start at the top.  We are who we think we are.  Our thoughts are incredibly powerful and they largely determine who we are and what we become.

The reality of who we are already exists.  If you have accepted Jesus Christ, you are a son or daughter of God.  If you do not know Jesus you are like a boat without an anchor, drifting.  If you want to know Jesus, it is as simple as realizing your need for Him and asking Him into your heart.

As a child of God, all thoughts of who you are, already exist and are recorded for you.  Our job is to change our thoughts to line up and agree with what he has said about us and what he has said for us to do.

God’s word, the Bible, tells us to be transformed by the renewing of our minds. (Romans 12:2)  It is by renewing our minds that we are transformed.  It is with renewed minds that we look at life, our dreams and destinations with a different view point; one that is positive, one that has faith, one that overcomes.

It starts the moment you open your eyes in the morning.  You awaken from that sweet dream; open your eyes and WHAM! Here comes the first missile.  The enemy may have shot it at you or it could be friendly fire; shot from your own gun set on automatic.  We have very ingrained thought patterns; good and bad, and they engage the moment you wake up.

Are your first thoughts, “oh my gosh, I have so much to do today.” or worse “There is no hope, I don’t even want to wake up.”  Life can be difficult.  We all face trials, struggles and heart ache.  Those who overcome and have victory in their lives are the ones who believe God’s word over their own circumstances.  The overcomers fight against the lies of the devil and their own negative thoughts.  They are the ones who are transformed by the renewing of their minds.

The truth is that our minds are battlefields.  It is not easy to stay out of negativity and self condemnation.  The world around us bombards us with reasons to believe that we will fail, that we are no good, that we screwed up AGAIN.  Dear one, these are not God’s standards for you.

It is not merely enough to just say, “Don’t think that way, just be positive.”  It is about replacing.  We must replace the negative thought with a truth.  The truth is not what YOU think, but what does God’s word say.  He says plenty about you, who you are and what you should think.  The Bible is an endless source of who we really are.

We are who God says we are.  We may feel like crud, like a looser or someone who will never make it; but that is not the truth.  As children of God we have been given a gift.  It is already in our possession, it belongs to us. We just need to open it.  The gift is who we are IN Christ.  He not only died to forgive your sins, He died to make you a new creation, to give you an inheritance, to give you position and authority.  The problem is that most of us do not know who we are IN HIM.  We are trying to earn something that already belongs to us through His blood, because of what HE did.

We must start off with the correct mindset. A correct mindset determines what we think about ourselves and our futures.  A correct mindset determines if we succeed or fail in our dreams and even in our happiness. A correct mindset determines what we believe about God and our relationship to Him.  You need to know what belongs to you as a child of the King.  He came to give us life abundant, overcoming power, joy unspeakable, a defeated enemy.  He delivered us out of the authority of darkness and translated us into the Kingdom of His Son.  He took us from being a convict, to a son with the privilege and right of fellowship with our Father. He has taken us from slavery to the throne, from bondage to freedom, from defeated to conqueror.  Tell yourself these things when you open your eyes each morning.

You are not what you feel like.  Feelings can change.  Feelings can lie.  The only sure, steadfast truth that we can stand firm on is, What does God say.”  What does he say about YOU.  Our thoughts about ourselves must be based on what he says and not what we feel or what our circumstances tell us.  Feelings change, circumstances change, God’s word does not.  This is an amazing yet difficult to grasp concept; the truth is not necessarily what we actually see and feel, it is what God says in spite of what we see or feel.

So the first thing that needs to be renewed is our minds.  Remember renew means to re-establish or make new.  Some of our thoughts are broken, so get some new thoughts.  Some of our thoughts are established in negativity or lies we’ve heard our whole lives.  It is time to re-establish those thoughts.  It is difficult to set goals and pursue dreams and change our direction if we do not change our minds first.

A good place to start is with our self talk; you know the things we always say to ourselves, the thoughts we think when laying in bed in the morning.   Some of it can be downright destructive.  It is time to replace.  When you realize your thoughts are negative, start proclaiming God’s truth about yourself.  You and the devil need to hear it.  Make some 3X5 cards of scriptures of who you are and have them ready when your thoughts are not right.  There is a tape recording playing in all of us with the words we ourselves and others have said about us numerous times.  If we keep hitting re-play, victory is unlikely.  At the end of this blog I will list scriptures for you to look up.  You yourself need to take the time to look these up and read them out loud.  We need to proclaim it and we need to hear it and we need to put forth some effort to seek out the truth.

You will then be renewing your mind.  It is not by your sheer will.  It is not because you set your mind to it.  It is not because you were able to eliminate the negative and become positive in your own power.  You are transformed as you believe and input God’s truth.  His word is alive.  It has creative power.  His words are like none other and the replacing of your thoughts with His is not a mere exercise in positive thinking.

I have a surprise for you.  As you do this, you may end up with an entirely different set of goals and dreams.  Ones for the new transformed you.

Dear friend, It is time to start at the top.  It is time for some victory.  It is time to get rid of ‘stinkin thinkin’ and think like the royalty you are; a child of the King.

These scriptures will get you started on thinking the right way.

I still remember when the Lord showed me just how much I meant to Him! Wow it is an amazing experience! Isn’t it wonderful to know who you are in Christ? It is something that will never leave you, it is something you can stand on when everything around you is shaking! It is knowing who you really are and not worrying about who and what everyone thinks you are! God’s love for us is amazing! I am so proud to be a child of my King! 🙂

Debbie i am slow getting your blog. read but it is always so good to read it. I am so very thankful for all the Holy Spirit has shown to me to think on and how He carries all things. I don’t have to worry over anything but to give it all to the Lord.

I know people if I tell them much of what goes down in my life they think I am under stress becasue that is what the most are under. The word of God is true and the one who knows their Lord knows He hold on to them. You have written a great blog and so thankful for how you are held by Him. Jody
