Distraction

October 4, 2011

Today I wanted to share  …. Oooh what was that?  Ok, as I was saying… kids, hush up I’m trying to write.  Now I don’t even remember what I was talking about… oh, what a pretty dress!  SQUIRREL!

Focus, an interesting word.  It is both a noun and a verb.  It is something we want to have and something we want to do, but if you are at all like me, some days you just don’t ‘got it’ as a noun or a verb.

How do we focus?  For me, I focus best without a lot of outside distractions.  When I write or read, I need to be in a quiet atmosphere.  I enjoy writing outside with the sounds of nature or listening to gentle instrumental music.  My boys on the other hand, tell me they cannot study without music that seems blaring to me.

When there are too many distractions, I will read the same sentence over and over and over and never know what it says.  Commotion around me while writing causes me to re-read what I have written numerous times so that I can pick up where I left off.

Those blond and senior moments that we all seem to suffer from are merely the result of distractions during the information inputting phase.

You were created for a special purpose.  God tells us that he chose us and called us before the creation of the world.  That is an amazing thing.  You are not an afterthought or a last minute thought, but an important pre-planned child of God.

Many of us spend our lives unsure of the purpose of our lives, and those who have a clue, are constantly being pulled off course through countless distractions.  The fact that you are reading this blog shows that you are a precious child of God and a busy parent.   Both of these are occupations and callings.

To fulfill your calling as a Child of God and a parent it takes focus.  So many things and people are screaming for your attention.  Sometimes you can feel like the Grinch who hates the “noise, noise, NOISE!” of Hooville.

Distractions abound.  If we were to list them, unfortunately the list would be far greater than our favorite things list.

Just because someone or something desires your time and attention does not mean that you must give it to them.  Turn your focus away from the noise.  Turn it toward Jesus.  Let Him be your focus and He will guide you.  He will reinforce your calling.  He will guide you and show you the way and He will give you everything you need to fulfill that purpose.

Today as you read this, know that I have prayed for you.  I have prayed that He will calm the noise and distractions in your life.  I have prayed that He will help you to order your days and that you will enjoy life.  I prayed that your purpose and calling will be renewed in your heart and mind and that you will gain focus for that purpose.

You too can pray that prayer.  But I know sometimes it helps knowing someone else is also praying for us.

So, if for only five minutes, go in your room and shut the door.  Ask Jesus to eliminate the noise from your life that is causing you to lose focus.  We are more than a chauffeur.  We are more than the sum of our activities.  We are special and unique.  We are called of God.  So get quiet and listen.
