Do Your Favorite Things

October 3, 2011

Were you able to take a moment and list a few of your favorite things?  I feel this is a good exercise to do.  Many of our days are filled with the next task before us and the busyness of each day.  We not only lack the time to do our favorite things, I think we are not even sure of what they are.

I decided to share my list of favorite things with you.  First and foremost, because my daily grind is just as crazy as yours.  I also want to slow things down and focus on what really matters.  So I followed my own advice and made my list.  Maybe, if you have not made your list yet, this will encourage you to do so.  You may also find some items that you also enjoy but have forgotten about in your day to day busyness.

So, even though I cannot sing like Julie Andrews and my list does not rhyme, here are a few of my favorite things.

I love to write.  Even when I am nowhere near paper or a computer, I am writing in my head.

I love to make stories for my family and create a yearly Christmas book.

I love sitting outside in every season.  I love the newly arriving vibrant green in spring.  I love summer nights and fireflies.  I love the red and orange leaves of autumn.  I also love pumpkin stands.  I love seeing countless stars on a clear moonless night and I love a huge orange harvest moon on the horizon.  I love to sit outside on a snowy evening, surrounded by silence and the gentle sound of the snow landing. On a quiet night you can actually hear it.  I love campfires in every season.  One year our kids went sledding at night with the snow falling, by a glowing campfire.  That was awesome.

I love fellowship.  If I could have someone over for dinner or a party every night, that would be just fine with me.  I am the right kind of party girl.

I love praise and worship.  When I praise God, I am standing before His throne and I experience such love and joy, I never want to leave His presence.

I love spending time with my family.  Anytime, anywhere.

I love laughing.  I enjoy humor and silliness, especially with my children.

I love reading stories by the fire aloud to my children.

I love putting my girls to bed, reading a bedtime story, saying prayers and singing their favorite songs.

I love a beautiful home.  When I’m bursting with creativity, I love to decorate.

I love to bless others.  I love to decorate other people’s homes.  I love to bring them meals and to send them reminders that they are thought of.  I love to encourage others and hopefully make a difference in their lives.  I love to used by God

Have I given you any ideas?  Are the wheels turning? When you look at your list, are these the items you are spending your time on?

We have entered a new season.  It is autumn, the glorious season of colored leaves, stunningly blue skies, pumpkins and campfires.  Check your list and see what fall items you have listed.  Make sure that you make time for these.  Enjoy some apple cider and a hay ride.  Sing some songs around the campfire with your family on a crisp cool fall night.  Do not let this lovely season pass without some time spent on your favorite things.

I forwarded this to my girls and challenged to make their list with me. Thanks Debbie for the reminder that we do need to stop and do things that we enjoy and love!!

I definitely don’t think a whole lot about every wonderful person and every wonderful activity that God has given me as I should. But if I stop to think about it and take time to do it, my life feels perfect and complete when I have taken the time to enjoy my relationship with Christ and when I am spending time doing pretty much anything with my family (blood-related and adopted :)). And thinking about them has been a lift for me lately. So thank you for taking the time to write this, Debbie 🙂

I stopped in the midst of my craziness today because my little five year old wanted a pinic. We packed a basket of silly little things to eat and enjoyed the beautiful day.
