Our Legacy

July 31, 2011

We’re pilgrims on the journey
Of the narrow road
And those who’ve gone before us line the way
Cheering on the faithful, encouraging the weary
Their lives a stirring testament to God’s sustaining grace

Surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses
Let us run the race not only for the prize
But as those who’ve gone before us
Let us leave to those behind us
The heritage of faithfulness passed on through godly lives

Oh may all who come behind us find us faithful
May the fire of our devotion light their way
May the footprints that we leave
Lead them to believe
And the lives we live inspire them to obey

Oh may all who come behind us find us faithful

After all our hopes and dreams have come and gone
And our children sift through all we’ve left behind
May the clues that they discover and the memories they uncover
Become the light that leads them to the road we each must find

Oh may all who come behind us find us faithful
Oh may all who come behind us find us faithful

As I drove home from receiving the news that I was to have a child, I sang this song as I wept.  For 21 years this has been the desire of my heart.

The words to that song by Steve Green and its message, to be honest, at times were far from my thoughts.  All of my decisions and actions have not always lined up with my heart’s desire.  But God is a merciful God.  He brings us back again and again and reminds us lovingly what really matters.

The events of this past week and the event of my son’s wedding in two weeks has returned me once again to what matters in life.  The bottom line is, will we be found faithful?

That faithfulness starts with knowing Jesus and walking with him every day.  That faithfulness shows in how we raise our children and that faithfulness shows by fulfilling the purpose God created us for.

I have not walked a perfect path.  As a mother I have made many mistakes.  But I believe ultimately, my husband and my children know who I love and who I follow and who I serve.  I leave them with NO doubts.  That is my legacy.  That is my greatest gift to my children.

So as you walk that narrow road today, may you leave behind; a heritage of faithfulness so that all who come behind you find you faithful.

I’ve always enjoyed this song. So true!
Yes, the legacy we leave behind is so important. I agree that many times I’ve failed as a wife and mom, but I believe my husband and children know they are loved!!
