The Grab and Go

July 7, 2011

You open your eyes and notice, “Oh the sun is shining, it looks like a lovely day.”  But the reality is, it does not matter what kind of day it is, your day is already filled.  Oh how you wish you could lie in bed a few more minutes or maybe just sit on the porch and start slowly.  But slowly is not a word that ever describes how you start your day.

We are over scheduled.  Our days are filled.  There are few days that we stay home all day if at all.  We all know by now the consequences of a hurried, over scheduled life.  I have been sharing with you for a month about some of them.  But there is one that may actually shorten your life. What?!! It is what I call “The Grab and Go.”

Our health is actually one of the causalities of our busy lifestyle.  There is no time for well planned, healthy meals.  There is only time to grab and go.  Breakfast, lunch and dinner, it does not matter what time of the day it is, there is no time for a proper meal.

Not only do fast food establishments offer choices for every meal, our grocery store aisles are filled with pre-packaged, ready to zap, quick meals.  Don’t be fooled, this is not actually food.  Food should bring nourishment to our bodies.

How many times have you said, “I don’t have time to eat.”?  I used to say it all the time.  The amazing thing was, that for a woman who had no time to eat, I sure was overweight.  Ahh, the result of the grab and go.

If you are not eating relatively healthy meals at least twice a day, something has to change.  The sad fact is that we are not getting any younger, and the lack of proper nourishment that our body is missing, is going to show up in one way or another, far before you’re ready.

Is that sport activity, music lesson or play date more important than YOU?  Are we short changing our children by offering them countless opportunities but poor health with which to enjoy those opportunities.  What about the future? We are short changing ourselves and our children.  I do not mean to sound grim, but the facts are there.

So, what to do?  If you do not have time to make your family decent meals on a fairly regular basis, (I’m not asking for perfection) then something has to go, or be reworked.  I’ve said it before, YOU are the keeper of the schedule.  You hold all authority and rulership.

It is time to stop our crazy out of control lives.  We need to take a stance, No more grab and go.  You may save your life and your family’s life too.

I can’t believe I allowed meal time to be optional for so long. Thank God he is helping me and redirecting me. Let’s not wait until it is too late and the damage to our health is too severe. Thanks for always reading Judy. You are a blessing.

Gotta minute? and Grab and Go! Yes–these things are killing our time management and our metabolic wellness. Metabolic wellness is the absolute goal. Sure, I have a weight loss practice but I don’t care what people weigh. That sounds funny coming from a bariatric doctor (medical weight loss physician)! But I don’t! There are only two groups of people that have benefited from the “low-fat” diet–the pharmaceutical industry and the food industry! Don’t grab the low-fat foods! Get away from the convenience foods–I mean the carbohydrate foods. If you take the fat out of something it is replaced with carbohydrates. What is the number one reason why we have so much “unwellness”? Food! Food is Medicine. Period. End of story! If you eat bad food, you are taking in bad medicine. Would a person willingly take bad medicine? I don’t know–would you?

Great post! America has got to quit depending on pills for every ill and start taking charge of our own health! Your doctor can not cure you! YOU, yes YOU, have to drive your own boat and it starts with your fork! Thanks Debbie on keeping the conversation going! It will take ALL of us! Dr. Haendiges

Thank you Dr. Haendiges for helping to change my life. Friends, take it from a professional. She knows what she is talking about. So grab the wheel of your boat. Get control of your fork and your time and start taking charge of your health and life.
